Charles Lindbergh’s historic solo nonstop transatlantic flight in 1927 began at what is now the San Diego International Airport. Because of this historic beginning, the San Diego International Airport (SAN) is also known as Lindbergh Field. Interestingly, SAN has the smallest geographical footprint of any major commercial airport in the country and yet is the busiest single-runway airport in the US.

San Diego, CA Business Background
During WWII, the military took over the airfield. While this is not an uncommon wartime practice, it is unusual that today a Coast Guard air station remains at the south-east corner of the airfield. The air station is across the street from the proper airport and planes must taxi across North Harbor Blvd, a heavily traveled road, to reach the runway.
